When starting your own company, you know it’s going to be hard. There are going to be highs, lows, in-betweens, and no sleep. Absolutely no sleep. Our CEO Scott Maloney and CMO Chad Person sat down and talked with Mike Kilcoyne, the Denver-based 20-something founder of Embrace the Suck, a podcast focusing on how important it is to accept the highs, but also the lows of entrepreneurship.

It was a great podcast to listen to, mostly because Chad and Scott laugh a lot, and I like laughing. Hearing them laughing made me laugh. It was a great ab workout.

I felt this podcast was a great reminder to those of us who work in Startup Land that we will not always be drinking beer at 2pm and playing ping pong with smiles on our faces. It’s hard work, and sometimes you have to pick up the already-peeled potato off the floor and throw it into the mashed potatoes, because that’s the only potato you have left - to run with Chad’s analogy.

I also really loved the marriage analogy that Mike kept referring to. I can only imagine what it was like when BowTie’s three cofounders got together and ‘popped the question’ to each other, probably in what we refer to as the ‘Speakeasy’ (our New Mexico office). Entrepreneurship, like marriage, is a hell of a lot of fun when things are good. But things aren’t always good, and to make it last takes a lot of hard work from every party. Good job on that analogy, Mike! The analogy, by the way, started because Chad took pictures of the team in bowties, making everyone think they were wedding photos - so funny.
